Prominent criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind launches campaign for Mayor of Toronto

Runs on platform of taxes, transportation and truth

TORONTO – MARCH 17, 2014 – Criminal defense lawyer Ari Goldkind announced his candidacy today for Mayor of Toronto.

“I’m running for Mayor because people can handle the truth,” said Goldkind. “They can handle the truth about tolls, transit, taxes, public servant wage hikes, and infrastructure—the realities of keeping this city great.”

The core of Ari’s campaign is a desire to speak straight with the people of Toronto.

“I’m not a career politician and I don’t tick all the boxes about who is supposed to run for mayor, but I do know the mayor has to make the case for Toronto. The rest of the field is just making the case for themselves,” said Goldkind. “Everyone I speak to is sick of hearing the same meaningless promises every election. The people of Toronto want to have the grown up conversations we need to have about our future and what it will take to get there.”

Goldkind’s announcement was accompanied by a clear pledge describing how he’ll fund growth by investing in infrastructure.

“Taxes. No one wants to say it, but taxes are going to have to go up. We need new dedicated funding to build transit, maintain the infrastructure we already have, and fund the services and programs that make this city a great place to live. The rest of the field knows this is the truth, but not one of them is willing to say it.

“On the flip side, the people of Toronto deserve to know that every dollar that is spent is being spent wisely. We can’t rubberstamp salary increases; they have to be fair and reasonable,” he said. “No one in the private sector has guaranteed annual salary increases and I don’t think it’s fair to ask the people of Toronto to keep opening their wallets without bothering to ask if it’s worth it.

“Some people may not like the things I’m going to say, but they can be sure that it’s what I believe and more importantly, it’s what I’m going to do.”

Goldkind is 40 years old and a lifelong resident of Toronto. After graduating from law school, Goldkind initially entered corporate law, but changed fields when he discovered his calling in criminal defense. In 2006, Ari opened his own practice, which he continues to run today. Ari’s passion for criminal defense is driven by his commitment to truth and justice, and his desire to defend those who are least able to defend themselves.

In his spare time, Ari enjoys cooking, reading and, more than anything, spending time in Toronto’s beautiful parks with his dog Ziggy.
